EV Charger Installation Christchurch
Charging an electric vehicle off a standard wall socket is slow and it is not what the socket was designed for. A dedicated charger is faster, safer, and lets you set the car to charge overnight on cheaper power.
We supply and install EV chargers for homes, workplaces and rental properties across Christchurch and Canterbury.
What is involved
Most home installs follow the same shape. We check the switchboard has capacity and a spare way, run a dedicated circuit to where the car parks, fit the charger and its protection, test it and issue a Certificate of Compliance.
The two things that change the price are the distance from the switchboard to the car, and whether the switchboard needs work before it can take another circuit. Older boards sometimes need a new main switch, an RCD or more space before anything else can happen. We will tell you that up front rather than after the job has started.
Home charging
For most homes a 7kW single-phase charger is the right answer. It will fill a typical battery overnight and works comfortably alongside the rest of the house. If you have three-phase power available, an 11kW or 22kW charger is an option and will charge proportionally faster.
Worth thinking about at the same time:
- Load management, so the charger backs off when the oven and the heat pump are both running rather than tripping the main switch
- Solar integration, so the car charges from your own generation during the day where it can
- Scheduling, so charging runs on an off-peak rate
- Where the car actually parks, including whether you ever park the other way around
Workplace and fleet charging
For businesses the questions are different. How many bays now and how many in three years, whether staff or customers are charging, whether you need to know who used what, and what the site supply can actually carry. We can look at the incoming supply and tell you honestly how many chargers it will take before Orion has to be involved.
We can also meter charging separately so EV power is not mixed in with the rest of the site load, which matters if you are recharging costs to staff or tenants.
New builds
If you are building, the cheapest time to prepare for an EV charger is before the linings go on, even if you are not buying the car yet. Running the cable and leaving a spare way on the board costs very little at that stage and saves a far more expensive job later.
What you get
Every install is carried out or supervised by a registered electrician and comes with a Certificate of Compliance. Residential work is covered by the $20,000 Master Electricians workmanship guarantee.
